Bears Host San Francisco To Open Homestand

The Bears begin a four-game homestand on Tuesday when San Francisco come to Stu Gordon Stadium.

Cal To Play Next Four Games On Pac-12 Insider

BERKELEY – The California baseball team returns to Stu Gordon Stadium for a four-game homestand beginning Tuesday when San Francisco makes its trip across the Bay Bridge. Tuesday’s game is slated to begin at 6:05 p.m. and will be streamed on Pac-12 Insider.
 
The Golden Bears (20-14) are coming off a series sweep over Pac-12 foe Washington State, their first sweep over the Cougars in the Palouse since 2002.
 
San Francisco (17-19) has gone 4-11 since the last meeting against the Bears, an 11-3 Cal road win on March 19. The Dons are coming off a series sweep at the hands of Gonzaga at Benedetti Diamond and are 2-8 over their last 10 games.

  • The Bears are 12-6 at home this season, including 8-1 in nonconference contests with the lone loss coming at the hands of Saint Mary’s last week. As a team, the Bears are hitting .275 at home and average 5.9 runs per contest. Cal’s pitching staff boasts a staff ERA of 3.47 at home and is holding opponents to a .245 average.
  • Cal pounded out a season-high 17 hits in the 8-2 win over the Cougars on Sunday. The finale continued a trend of Cal coming up clutch with runners on and 2 outs. Cal hit .342 (13-for-38) with two outs for the series and was 10-for-20 in the finale.  
  • The Bears blasted five more home runs over the weekend. Rodney Green Jr. and Jarren Advincula both went deep in Sunday’s win. Cal is now 18-9 when hitting a home run and 12-3 when hitting two or more.
    • The five home runs last weekend give the Bears 51 on the year, which is second in the Pac-12. Cal is averaging 1.50 home runs per contest.
    • Caleb Lomavita is fourth in the conference with 11 home runs. Rodney Green Jr. hit his ninth on Sunday.
  • Freshman Jarren Advincula reached base safely twice on Sunday, going 1-for-5 with a fielder’s choice. In doing so, he extended his reached base safely streak to 25 games.
  • More on Advincula: In 14 at-bats last weekend, he did not strike out once. He is the hardest player in the conference to strike out – averaging a strikeout every 11.6 at-bats, which ranks 33rd in the NCAA.
  • Cal’s bullpen had a tremendous weekend in the Palouse. The Bears’ relief pitchers combined to go 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA. In 19.0 innings pitched, they scattered 18 hits, and allowed seven earned runs with four walks to 26 strikeouts. Trey Newmann and Luke Short were brilliant out of the pen. The duo combined to strike out nine apiece in their outings against the Cougars.
  • Peyton Schulze is red-hot at the dish. The junior went 7-for-15 over the weekend, clubbing a pair of doubles. He now has 13 on the year, which is third-most in the Pac-12.
  • Tuesday’s matchup against San Francisco will be the Bears’ sixth contest against teams from the West Coast Conference. Cal is 4-1 against its neighbors from the WCC. Schulze has feasted on WCC pitching, hitting .400 with four doubles, a home run, and 14 RBI in five contests.
  • Cal’s pitching staff has also fared well against the WCC. Junior Andres Galan leads the way, going 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA in four appearances against teams from the West Coast Conference. In 17.2 innings, he has struck out 21 and held opponents to a .212 average.

 
 
SERIES HISTORY
 

  • Tuesday will be the 181st meeting between the Bears and Dons. Cal owns a 132-48 advantage in the series. Under Mike Neu, the Bears are 9-4 against the Dons. Last time out, Cal defeated USF 11-3 on March 19 at Benedetti Diamond. Galan got the win, tossing four strong. Nico Button went 2-for-2 and hit his first career home run.

  • Cal will remain at home when No. 5 Oregon State comes to Stu Gordon Stadium. The Beavers enter this week with a 29-5 overall record and sit atop the Pac-12 standings at 10-4 following a series win over Stanford in Corvallis over the weekend. The series begins Friday at 6:05 p.m. and will be streamed on Pac-12 Insider.
