Patna: Former Union minister and senior BJP functionary Ravi Shankar Prasad on Tuesday accused the
Congress
of “snatching” part of the
reservation
meant for the
OBC
groups in Karnataka to give it to
Muslims
in violation of the constitutional provisions.
Prasad said the reservation is provided on account of social and educational backwardness, and not on the basis of religious denomination.
Talking to mediapersons at the party’s media centre, Prasad said it is a desperate act on the part of the Congress to appease the Muslim community. He cornered both the Congress and RJD on the matter, besides taking them on for their charges that neither the Constitution, nor the reservation, nor even democracy and the Constitution, was safe in the hands of the BJP.
“The fact that even the Congress govt in Telangana has maintained that it would follow the Karnataka model, it points to the diabolical design of the Congress to harm the interests of the Hindu OBCs,” he added.
“We believe that even the OBCs among Muslims should get reservation benefits. But what the Congress govt in Karnataka has done is that all Muslims have been categorised as OBCs,” Prasad said.
“They (Congress and RJD) charge that the BJP is against reservation. The charge is false and smacks of desperation on the part of the opposition, Prasad said, adding the reservations will be there forever. The BJP will only oppose the grant of reservation on the basis of religion,” he added.
Prasad said the Congress had dismissed elected state govts 90 times, with former PM Indira Gandhi doing it 50 times, while the party also imposed Emergency. Prasad also recalled that during the Ram Mandir movement, the Congress had dismissed not only the BJP govt in Uttar Pradesh, but also its govts in Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. “In contrast, the Narendra Modi govt has not dismissed any elected government of the opposition in the last 10 years,” Prasad said.
Prasad also assailed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for promising to conduct socio-economic survey if the INDIA bloc is voted to power.
