SAN FRANCISCO (TND) — San Francisco thieves broke into the car of Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., Thursday, making off with his luggage and leaving him without formalwear for a major campaign event, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The vehicle was reportedly parked in a downtown San Francisco parking garage for several days while Rep. Schiff visited the area on campaign business. The Golden State representative currently has his sights set on the Senate vacancy left by the late Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif.

Thursday’s campaign dinner featured powerful attorney Joe Cotchett, among other supporters hoping to boost Rep. Schiff’s Senate odds, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The representative was reportedly advised not to leave anything in the car, but a press agent told the publication he “was in a hurry and didn’t want to be late.”

Without a suit, Rep. Schiff attended the event in “his shirt sleeves and a hiking vest while everyone else sat in suits,” the publication wrote.

“I guess it’s ‘Welcome to San Francisco,’” Cotchett’s press agent Lee Houskeeper reportedly noted in response to Rep. Schiff’s plight.

“Adam really showed himself tonight,” Cotchett told the publication of the representative’s demeanor through the ordeal. “He’ll be a great senator — he’s going to change the Senate tremendously.”

Rep. Schiff reportedly appeared calm, telling the San Francisco Chronicle “yes, they took my bags, but I’m here to thank Joe.”

Neither San Francisco police nor Rep. Schiff’s office immediately responded to a request for comment from The National Desk (TND) Friday.

The incident comes just days after Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s home was broken into by a city resident. 29-year-old Ephraim Hunter was arrested Sunday after allegedly smashing a window of the mayor’s home while it was occupied.

Rep. Schiff isn’t the only member of Congress to fall victim to swelling crime in major metro areas. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, in October was carjacked at gunpoint in Washington D.C.’s Navy Yard.

“I do have a black belt, but I recognize when you got three, three guns, yeah, I looked at one with a gun another with a gun, one behind me,” Cuellar said of the incident. “So they said they wanted my car, I said, ‘Sure.’ You got to keep calm under those situations and then they took off.”
