SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — A revolving restaurant space that sits atop the Hyatt Regency San Francisco along the Embarcadero is set to begin spinning again, the hotel announced Thursday. The rotating venue, which was previously home to The Equinox restaurant, will begin rotating again in celebration of the hotel’s 51st anniversary.
Currently, the space is occupied by the Regency Club and sports rotating 360-degree panoramic views of the city and the Bay. Access to the reopened space will be reserved for World of Hyatt Globalist Elite Tier hotel guests and guests who book special packages at the hotel.
The revolving Equinox ground to a half in 2007 and since then, has been occupied as a private club for World of Hyatt members. The move to refurbish the space and get it moving again was inspired by long-time hotel staff engineer, Dennis Alcaire, who’s been with the hotel for 47 years.
“It brings me great joy to see the rotation’s revival before my retirement,” he said.
The refurbished Regency Club will rotate six hours a day, three in the morning, and three in the evening, the hotel said. Each 360-degree trip takes 56 minutes. In the morning hours, a continental breakfast will be served Wednesday through Thursday.
In the evening hours, there will be an honor bar featuring hors d’oeuvres, Tuesday through Saturday.
“On the heels of celebrating the hotel’s 50th anniversary last year, we are excited to continue to re-introduce iconic aspects of the property in new ways,” shares Hyatt Regency San Francisco General Manager Matthew Humphreys. “Restoring the rotating venue pays homage to the hotel’s longstanding prominence as a fixture along the Embarcadero and allows guests to create new memories in a historic space.”
Opened in 1973, the Hyatt Regency SF was designed by renowned brutalist architect John Portman, who designed the Westin Bonaventure in Los Angeles, which is also home to a revolving restaurant. The Hyatt boasts a 42,000 square-foot lobby that holds the Gunness World Record for largest hotel lobby in the world.
