CANANDAIGUA — The volume on prayer is being turned up at the Notre Dame Retreat House in Canandaigua with the introduction of its “Rock ‘n Roll Reflection” each Monday in April from 4–8 p.m. The free weekly event features familiar songs from the modern music era that can be interpreted with deeper religious meaning.
“It’s a way to attract everyone from baby boomers to Gen X and invite them to sit in our beautiful chapel and reflect on their relationship with God while they listen to songs they know and love,” said Nancy Lynch, executive director. “It’s free, fun and just one of the many ways Notre Dame Retreat House invites people to grow in their faith.”
Featured artists range from Adele and the Beatles to INXS and U2. There are books with lyrics for people to follow along and visitors are invited to sign a guest book and leave their own suggestions for songs.
“We all follow our own journey with God,” reflects Lynch. “This gives people a unique way to pray, especially those who find traditional prayer difficult. They can stop in for as long or as little as they want and hopefully walk away with a deeper meaning to the songs they’ve loved forever.”
Among the artists and songs are: Adele “Make You Feel My Love”; the Beatles “Let It Be”; The Byrds “Turn! Turn! Turn!”; The Calling “Wherever Your Will Go”; Creed “Higher”; Neil Diamond “Holly Holy”; Doobie Brothers “Jesus is Just Alright with Me”; George Harrison “My Sweet Lord”; Imagine Dragons “Believer”; INXS “Never Tear Us Apart”; Carol King “You’ve Got a Friend”; New Seekers “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”; Elvis Presley “The Wonder of You”; R.E.M. “Everybody Hurts”; Simon and Garfunkel “The Sound of Silence”; Bruce Springsteen “Jesus Was an Only Son”; U2 “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”; Carrie Underwood “Jesus, Take the Wheel”; and The Youngbloods “Get Together.”
