Flea market today at Methodist Church

The Betty Newhouse Circle Flea Market will be held 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the parking lot at Culpeper United Methodist Church on Oaklawn Drive.

Items available at the 34 registered tables will include furniture, clothing, children’s toys, arts and crafts and the CUMC preschool will host their annual spring plant sale. Proceeds will benefit various community groups.

Mother’s Day bake sale at Gourdvine

Gourdvine Baptist will host a Mother’s Day bake sale from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the church, located at 7103 Eggbornsville Road in Culpeper.

The sale, rain or shine, always features delicious items to benefit the church’s children’s camp fund. There will also be free spaces for moms in the community who would like to sell some of their treasures.

Mother’s Day Service at Beulah next Sunday

Beulah Baptist is holding a special Mother’s Day Service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 12, at the church, located at 9297 Eggbornsville Road in Culpeper.

Dr. Genevinia Baker England, from Accokeek, Maryland, will be the guest preacher. Sunday School is at 9 a.m. All mothers attending the service will receive a special Mother’s Day gift.

Governors recognize Jewish American Heritage Month

In recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month in May, Gov. Glenn Youngkin joined the nation’s other Republican governors this week to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. Unanimously, all Republican governors released the following a joint statement:

“As governors and community leaders, we are honored to recognize May as Jewish American Heritage Month, especially as Jewish people around the world face unspeakable persecution.

“Our country has a long history of supporting Israel, and now more than ever, it’s important we stand in solidarity with the Jewish community against horrific acts of antisemitism, religious bigotry and terrorism both in our country and across the globe.

“Throughout May, we are proud to celebrate Jewish heritage and the many positive contributions that the Jewish community has had on our nation while reaffirming our unwavering support for the Nation of Israel and her people.”

Clothes closet & food pantry grand opening

Join Unity Baptist Church of Culpeper for the grand opening of a clothes closet and food pantry, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on Saturday, June 1.

Those who are in need can shop items for free and grab a hotdog or hamburger in the parking lot on the way out. The church is located at 128 W. Culpeper St.

Family Expo, Farmer’s Market opening in church lot

Opening day of the Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market is today, in the parking lot at Culpeper Baptist Church, and the Touch a Truck and Family Expo, later this afternoon.

The Farmer’s Market runs 7:30 a.m. to noon.

The Mom2Mom Family Expo, featuring Touch a Truck, will be 2-4 p.m., with face painting, a moon bounce, kids activities, food and community resources. Kona Ice will be on site raising funds for Mom2Mom, along with a raffle for Culpeper Foster Care.

The Carter Family Sound at Jeffersonton Baptist Church

Ronnie Williams and The Carter Family Sound will appear in concert tonight at the Jeffersonton Baptist Church. Music will begin at 6:30 p.m., preceded by a spaghetti dinner from 5-6:15 p.m. There is no charge to attend, but donations will be accepted.

Williams said the show “will honor Mother Maybelle Carter and all mothers in celebration of Mothers’ Day.” Randy Sheads and Friends will open the show. Williams plays guitar and autoharp in the Mother Maybelle Carter style.

Virginia Bronze handbell ensemble at Culpeper Baptist

Culpeper Baptist Church’s 2024 Concert Series continues at 7 p.m. on May 19, with Virginia Bronze, a premier handbell ensemble.

The group has performed with the Washington Chorus, Cathedral Choral Society and Strathmore Children’s Chorus, among others.

Hometown favorites, the Seipp/Sheets Duo, will celebrate the nation’s birthday with their wonderful Patriotic Concert at 7 p.m. on July 3. Seipp is Sargent Major (Retired) from the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.”

Sheets is a retired ceremonial organist at Arlington National Cemetery. They have performed numerous concerts in recent years in states all across the nation as well as abroad.

Concerts are held in the main sanctuary and are free to the public.

Virginia Baptist Historical Society annual meeting at CBC

Culpeper Baptist Church will host the annual meeting of Virginia Baptist Historical Society on Tuesday, May 14, an opportunity to learn about Culpeper’s significant role in the story of religious liberty in the country.

Dr. John Ragosta will be the keynote speaker.

Dinner is at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall, followed by the annual meeting at 7:15 p.m. in the sanctuary. It is free and open to the public.

Amissville United Methodist Women yard sale

Amissville United Methodist holds Adult Sunday School at 9 a.m. in the social hall of the church, located at 14760 Lee Highway. Sunday service is at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary. Zoom and livestream services are also available.

Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 7:30 p.m. Mondays and Bible Study with Frank Fishback is at 7 p.m. Tuesdays, both in the social hall.

From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. today, the United Methodist Women will host a community yard sale at the church. Selling spaces are $20 and setup time is 7:30 a.m. Food will be for sale. The rain date is June 1.

The UM Women will hold a business meeting at 9:30 a.m., on May 8, in the social hall. The UM Men are back next weekend with another country breakfast, 8-11 a.m. on May 11, in the social hall.

Need of the Week: breakfast foods

The Culpeper Food Closet is a community outreach ministry created and supported by St. Stephens Episcopal Church. They depend on donations of food and personal items, as well as financial support from the community.

Every week, the food closet posts a few items they need, but any donation is gratefully accepted. The needs this week are breakfast foods: individual oatmeal packets, Pop Tarts, cold cereal, granola bars and canned fruit.

Sermon topic—S7GNS: Generous Grace

Mountain View Community Church holds a trio of Sunday morning services — at 8:30, 10 and 11:30 a.m. — at the Culpeper campus, located at 16088 Rogers Road. The sermon topic for Sunday is “S7GNS: Generous Grace.”

Children’s programs for babies-4th grade are available at the 8:30 a.m. service only. Babies to 8th grade programs are at 10 a.m. and, for the 11:30 service, children’s programs are available for babies-preK and 5th to 8th grade.
