(KRON) – A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday and the Bay Area has many locations for viewing. The eclipse is set to occur around 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
According to NASA, a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby obscuring the view of the Sun from a small part of Earth, totally or partially.
Berkeley: The Lawrence Hall of Science, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The event will include safe solar viewing, solar activities, expert explanations of how solar eclipses happen, and a live stream of totality in our Theater. Building a solar clock, constructing a pinhole sun viewer, and utilizing Ultraviolet Beads are the establishment’s solar activities.
San Francisco: California Academy of Sciences
The viewing will be at the new Hohfeld Hall show, The Sun and Space Weather. Viewers will have using various devices, including conventional telescopes with safe solar filters and projection apparatuses such as “Sun-Spotters.” Solar viewing glasses will be on sale in the Academy Store for $3 and free for members.
Kenwood: Robert Ferguson Observatory, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The observatory is an “open house” style event that will show a livestream of the full total eclipse in our classroom and engage in some other activities at the observatory. This is a free event, but the Sugarloaf Ridge State Park day-use parking fee will be required, according to the Robert Ferguson Observatory.
San Francisco Public Library, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The Mission Bay Branch Library will have a viewing party today. According to the library, free eclipse glasses while supplies last. The event will have activities.
San Francisco’s Exploratorium
San Francisco’s Exploratorium will be on-site in Junction, Texas and Torreón, Mexico, where it will livestream images of all phases of the solar eclipse beginning at 10 a.m. for free.
According to NASA, the next total solar eclipse will be Aug. 23, 2044.
