Local nonprofit group Dream of Detroit is hosting a Black Religion Summit later this month to bring together Black people of multiple faiths for a dialogue on ways to challenge racial and economic injustice in the city.

Mark Crain, executive director for Dream of Detroit says all Black religious movements in the country focus on fighting white-supremacy and anti-Black racism.

“We want to take these conversations and really operationalize them in our community work. You know, we want to improve relationships between the churches in various neighborhoods and the mosques that are down the street from them,” he said. “We want to improve the relationships between the various strands of activists and organizers in the city.”

Crain says the event — set for April 19-22 at the Historic Masjid Wali Muhammad mosque in Detroit’s Dexter-Linwood neighborhood — is an opportunity for the different groups to explore their differences and find a way to work together to move toward the common goal.

Dr. Kameelah Mu’Min Oseguera, the founder and president of the Muslim Wellness Foundation, will give a keynote address on “Interfaith Dynamics and Spiritual Diversity in Black/African American Communities” at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 20.
